Mines create new businesses and help existing companies expand and gain expertise for future growth. Since 1996, mining companies have spent $16.6 billion in the North. Of this, several billion is with Indigenous northern businesses. Two-thirds of every dollar the North’s mines spend on daily operations and construction goes to local companies.
In 2017, the North’s six mines (3 in the NWT and 3 in Nunavut) spend a total of just over $1 billion with local businesses.
