Community Consultation

During community consultation, mining company representatives met often with local community residents. In the mid 1990s, Diavik’s Erik Madsen (currently General Manager of Sustainability with De Beers Canada) talks with local community members near mine site. Photo: Diavik Diamond Mines

The ultimate success of developing a resource responsibly and successfully very much depends on community consultation. Companies looking construct a mine meet early and often with local communities.

Consulting with communities gives everyone an opportunity to communicate information and ask questions. Key to the successful outcome is recognition that the best results come from partnership. Everyone shares in the responsibilities of a potential development and everyone shares in the resulting benefits.

Community consultation occurs throughout all mining cycle phases.
